Resource Critique Activity
For this assignment, I chose to evaluate the ELA technology standards for 2nd grade, specifically the lesson plan from the CPALMS resource at this website http://www.cpalms.org/Public/PreviewResourceLesson/Preview/41535 .
I felt like this was a very thorough, but a little too rigid in its expectations of the students in the given amount of time. I also, think that the way to start the lesson, with the star and starless students, is a little too serious and negative for the young students. If I was implementing this lesson plan into my classroom, I would likely omit that introductory piece and add a group discussion about emotions of Seuss' "Sneetches" instead, to make it a more inclusive activity. In terms of the technology elements, I think it would be better to have both a visual and audio recording of the students presentation of the book, instead of just an audio recording. I believe that having both recordings will allow students to see the product of their work and have a greater ability to critique themselves after it is completed. I don't think it would be difficult to carry out this change, as all it would require would be a recording device, like a smartphone, which is not hard to transport of find. In regards to the time constraint that I mentioned earlier, I think that it would be better to allow two days for this lesson (one for planning and recording, and one for Carousel Brainstorming and discussion) as opposed to one day. I really enjoyed the Carousel Brainstorming style of question answering it gave, but I think a modification that will allow the teacher to save their responses might be better in the long-run, as a reference source. To do this, I think maybe having an online discussion board or using a drawing/typing software on a large screen would be good. Overall, I think that this is a fantastic resource that could be made even better through the adaption of it to a specific classroom or with a specific goal in mind.

I love the idea of an online discussion board. It would be a super fun idea to get the kids involved.
ReplyDeleteThe overall lesson was defiantly a fun way to learn! However, I totally agree with you on the downfalls but you did an awesome job figuring out how to work around it and revise the plan to make it work better!
